Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is composed of three main categories: Basic needs, psychological needs, and self-fulfillment needs. The basic needs category includes both physiological and safety needs. The psychological needs category includes belongingness and love needs, as well as esteem needs. The last category of self-fulfillment encompasses all aspects of self-actualization.

I have personally used technology to meet all the needs in Maslow’s Hierarchy. The physiological needs section has been met by my use of apps to deliver food to my home and workplace and to adjust the temperature in my home using a smart thermostat. The safety needs category has been met by my use of security cameras and monitoring system in my house and a video doorbell to alert me of someone at my door and to know who it is before I answer it. For the belongingness and love needs category has been met using social media, text messaging, and voice and video calls to regularly keep in touch with my family, friends, and even co-workers. The category of esteem needs has been met by using email to relay important achievements to loved ones and to receive important information such as being accepted into a university or being offered a good job. I’ve used technology to meet the self-actualization tier of Maslow’s Hierarchy by helping me learn to play the guitar. I have used software to learn the chords as well as both a digital and physical guitar tuner. Technology can be used in almost every aspect of your life.
