There are many individual motives that leads a person to commit crimes. Seven of the most common are: entertainment, political, revenge, boredom, recognition, for money, and multiple reasons. If I had to rank these motives from 1-7 in to order that makes the most sense for committing crimes with 1 being the one that makes the most sense, I would rank money as #1 for being the motive that makes the most sense because many people, and criminals especially, are money motivated more than anything else. I would rank multiple reasons for #2 because I believe that boredom and entertainment go hand-in-hand. If a criminal is bored, then they will go out in search of something to entertain themselves. For #3 I would choose entertainment because many criminals are highly intelligent and need something to keep them entertained even if they are not necessarily getting anything out of committing these crimes aside from mental stimulation. For the next motive that makes sense, I would choose boredom for #4 because when a person is bored, they may do things that they normally would not do, including commit crimes. The motive I would choose for #5 is revenge because many people would use crime as a way to get revenge on someone or even a company, but I don’t believe that would be a common motive for many criminals. The motive that I would select for #6 of motives that make the most sense is political because even though politics play a large role in our lives and the decisions that we make, I don’t think it is a very large factor that would lead a person to commit a crime. And finally, the motive I would rank at #7 for being the motive that makes the least sense for committing crime is recognition. This is because most criminals don’t want to be caught and therefor would not want to be recognized for the crimes they commit. Only a few would be overconfident enough to commit a crime for recognition and even then, I believe it would be to serve a greater purpose than just to be merely recognized.
