My journey in ODU’s Cybersecurity program has been transformative and rewarding. From mastering technical skills to understanding the broader implications of cybersecurity, I have gained invaluable knowledge that will guide me in my career. The program has not only equipped me with expertise in areas like network security, digital forensics, ethical hacking, and cybersecurity law but also provided insights into how these disciplines intersect with law, ethics, and business. I am excited to share my reflections on how this program has shaped my professional outlook.
One of the hardest parts of the program was balancing the technical skills while also understanding the legal and ethical implications of cybersecurity. For example, cyber law was tough at first because I had to learn how to navigate the legal complexities of things like data privacy and intellectual property in the digital world. To overcome this, I took a more interdisciplinary approach by connecting what I learned in cybersecurity ethics with real-world examples. I also made use of discussion boards to break down the material and better understand its practical application.
This approach helped me understand not just how to secure networks, but also why it is important to follow laws and ethical guidelines. I really appreciated how ODU’s Cybersecurity program connects the technical side with other fields like law, ethics, and business. For example, digital forensics and cyber law helped me understand the legal and investigative side of cybersecurity, while cybersecurity ethics made me think critically about the moral implications of the decisions we make as cybersecurity professionals. The integration of these courses helped me develop a well-rounded understanding of cybersecurity, teaching me to approach challenges from both a technical and an ethical/legal perspective.
IDS 493 is the capstone course that ties together everything I have learned throughout the program. It focuses on real-world problem-solving, requiring interdisciplinary thinking and collaboration to create effective solutions. A major skill I developed in IDS 493 was project management. Managing the project and making sure I stayed on track helped me realize how important it is to not just have technical skills, but also to be organized and collaborative. It was super rewarding to see how all my coursework came together.
The course also helped me improve my communication skills, as I had to explain complex concepts to my potential viewers who may not always have the same level of technical knowledge as I do. The skills I gained from IDS 493 will be super useful in my future career, especially when I’m working on real-world projects. I utilized time management as well as my organizational skills to showcase my projects and courses completed.
The interdisciplinary approach at ODU has been key in shaping my understanding of cybersecurity. I now see the value in combining technical skills with knowledge of the law, ethics, and business practices. Courses like digital forensics, cyber law, and cybersecurity ethics were crucial in giving me a broader perspective and preparing me for the complex challenges in the cybersecurity field.
Moving forward, I am excited to continue learning and apply everything I have learned in my future career. My next steps include applying for cybersecurity roles where I can use my project management and technical skills, especially in areas like incident response and data protection. I am also interested in gaining more experience with digital forensics and cyber law to pursue a career that combines technical expertise with legal knowledge. I am confident that the solid foundation built at Old Dominion University will propel me toward achieving my professional goals.
