Where I’m from poem
Being able to know my students shows them that I care about them. As a beginning of the school year activity, students can create a “where I’m from poem” (Scholastic Inc., 2019). This will help get to know my students. To build these lists into poems, students will pick out the images and details that are the most meaningful to them. When they start writing, they can repeat the phrase “I am from” to structure their poems if they would like (Scholastic Inc., 2019). The use of this poem as a get to know your student activity allows students to be comfortable in a classroom where students are different. Not just looks, but also their religion, sexuality, ethnicity even language can make students feel out of place in a classroom. Especially in big-city schools, many students come from different backgrounds. Allowing students to write about who they are and where they come from shows that someone is interested in getting to know them, which is sometimes just want students want, a person who takes time out of their day to understand them. This activity will also make the classroom an acceptable environment and also make students feel welcomed despite their differences among other students. I will enrich this activity by allowing students who are comfortable to share their poem with the class and I will write my own and share it as well.
