As a teacher I don’t only want to have a relationship with just my students, I also want to have a relationship with my students’ families. I would like for their families to be informed about what is going on in the classroom so if anything goes wrong or their child gets a bad grade on their report card, the parentor guardian will know why. One way to share communication between a student and their family is a positive note home. The use of a positive note can be beneficial to not just my students but also their parents. A positive note will consist of me saying a good thing their child has done in my classroom that day. “When you send a positive note home with a student, the other students notice. They’ll work harder knowing that they can earn a nice note to take home to their family.” (Smith, n.d.) this helps make a more friendly environment for the students and allows for friendly competition all while behaving and building relationships within the classroom. Smith also stated that Oftenit seems like the only time parents are contacted is when their kids do something wrong. Adding this strategy to your arsenal gives you an excuse to contact parents positively. Sending positive notes home shows parents that their child will get more than the negative things out of me being their teacher. Below is an example of a positive note home.

 

This note will consist of a brief description of what positive action their child took that day this builds relationships with parents and students to show that I care about them and that I am reaching out to tell a student’s parents how well they are doing in my class.
