The American Civil War was the single deadliest american conflict in history. The war started in April of 1861 when the confederat army attacked fort sumpter in south Carolina.The Union and Confederacy quickly raised volunteer and conscription armies that fought mostly in the South over the course of four years. Intense combat left 620,000 to 750,000 americans dead, more than the number of U.S. military deaths in all other wars combined. The event that started this devastating conflict was the attack of Fort Sumpter. During the war Abraham Lincoln delivered the emancipation proclomation which freed all the slaves in the confederate states. The turning point battle in the war, and most likely the most famous in american history, would be the battle of Gettysburg. This battle had the most american casualties than any battle previous or to come.
