Obtaining the Connection
I have been given an assignment for my sports communication class, where I have to reach out and form a connection with a professional in the sports industry. When this assignment was first handed out, I started to panic a little, mainly due to the fact that I have absolutely zero of the qualifying credentials that I assumed were necessary to receive a response from a sports industry professional. Before I gave into the doubt, I decided to turn to my mentor, my dad, and take advantage of the massive network he has accumulated over his professional career.
So I gave my dad a call, and luckily for me, he was in New York City for a business meeting and just happened to be sitting right next to a coworker of his. His coworker happened to still be in contact with his college roommate. This roommate ended up being Andy Goldberg, the Executive VP and Chief Marketing Officer of the New York Mets. Mr. Allocca, my dad’s coworker, generously offered to connect and introduce me to Mr. Goldberg via email. Despite his hectic schedule, Mr. Goldberg graciously agreed to help me throughout the semester. I couldn’t be more excited and grateful for this opportunity.
