How does cyber technology impact interactions between offenders and victims?
Cyber technology creates a platform for offenders and victims. The internet plays a big role as a communicator between the two. With the internet, you are able to connect and communicate with people all across the world. Some communication and connection may be unwanted from victims. Offenders use this technology for wrong and try to harass, harm, and cause unwanted attention with their victims. This misuse of computer technology causes cyber crime. This can be dangerous as the offender can be anonymous and doesn’t have to be in the same vicinity as the victim. One example is cyber stalking. Cyber stalking is when you harass or threaten somebody over the internet or using an electronic device to reach the victim. Offenders can track your location, stalk your personal pages on social media platforms, and also communicate directly without permission. This is why it important to keep your personal information and whereabouts safe and private where not anybody can view these things. There can also be use of hate groups who gain following through the use of technology. These groups can promote violence and harassment amongst others strictly through technology. One example of this are discord groups where there is a group of people who all have hate toward black people and other races. These groups get together online from all over the world to embrace and promote violence against these other races and can lead to physical altercations when they leave their technological device. The impact of the technology can be severe with this. This also leads to victims online being harassed too. Victims can be targeted by hackers because of their hate for the victim and choose to leak private information, spread rumors or lies, spread propaganda, and create fake content to make the victim look bad. This behavior is deemed unlawful when taken to the extreme.
