While looking at the NICE Framework, I noticed that there are some areas that I would like to focus my career on more than others.  Protection and Defense would be one area I want to focus on as it is most appealing to me. This area offers hands-on engagement with threats and it attracts me because I enjoy responding to threats and making sure systems stay secure. Another area that is appealing to me is Design and Development. It emphasizes building systems with security elements in mind which require creative thinking and problem solving skills. Less appealing areas would be Cyberspace Intelligence because it is focused on analysis and planning which does not directly deal with hands-on work.

Empiricism is the principle that knowledge is grounded in observation, experience, and evidence and it plays an important role in making cybersecurity practices more effective. Empirical data allows for emerging threats because logs, intrusion detection alerts, and incident reports provide measurable evidence. With this, it allows organizations to detect threats faster which reduces the time that could be wasted on finding the threat manually. The effectiveness of the current security measures with empiricism, such as penetration testing, shows if the defenses created would work in a real life attack. This helps organizations refine and find the weak and strong spots in their defense. Empirical data guides the development of future strategies by studying attack patterns and having a paper trail of evidence, it allows for future people in cyber to study the mistakes and learn from them.
