Reflection on My Academic and Professional Growth
Completing my Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity at Old Dominion University has allowed me to bring together my professional experience, technical knowledge, academic research, and interdisciplinary education. Before beginning this degree, I already had professional experience in cybersecurity and certifications that provided me with technical knowledge. However, my college experience helped me understand cybersecurity from a much broader perspective. I learned that protecting information and systems requires more than knowing how technology works. Cybersecurity professionals must also understand people, policies, ethics, organizations, communication, and the social consequences of technology.
Looking back at my coursework while developing this ePortfolio helped me recognize three major skills that represent my academic and professional growth: cybersecurity and technical knowledge, analytical and critical thinking, and research, communication, and interdisciplinary problem-solving. These skills also connect to the Security Analyst position I examined during IDS 493. The position emphasized technical knowledge, analytical thinking, organization, attention to detail, communication, integrity, and the ability to work with sensitive information.
The nine artifacts included in my portfolio provide evidence of these skills. More importantly, reflecting on them helped me understand how different courses and disciplines have contributed to my career readiness.
Skill 1: Cybersecurity and Technical Knowledge
My first marketable skill is cybersecurity and technical knowledge. My cybersecurity education strengthened my knowledge of network security, risk management, vulnerability assessment, security policies and compliance, incident response, cloud security, ethical hacking, and cybersecurity strategy. Three artifacts that demonstrate this skill are my Steganography Lab, Change Healthcare Cyberattack project, and Cybercrime Concept Map.
Artifact 1: Steganography Lab
The Steganography Lab provided hands-on experience rather than simply requiring me to read about a cybersecurity concept. During this assignment, I used steganography to hide information inside another file and then extracted the hidden information to verify that the process worked.
This artifact taught me an important difference between understanding a cybersecurity term and actually applying the concept. I had to follow a technical process, use the appropriate commands, troubleshoot the steps, and verify my results. It strengthened my attention to detail because a small mistake in a command or file location could prevent the process from working correctly.
This type of hands-on learning is valuable to my career because cybersecurity professionals must be able to understand how information can be hidden, protected, manipulated, or discovered. It also demonstrates my ability to take technical instructions and successfully apply them in a working environment.
Artifact 2: When Healthcare Gets Hacked
My Change Healthcare cyberattack project demonstrates another side of my technical knowledge. Instead of performing a lab, I investigated a real cybersecurity attack and explained how it happened in understandable terms.
My research showed that attackers used compromised credentials to access a remote-access application and that multi-factor authentication was not enabled on the affected system. I also examined why the attack became such a major national problem. Change Healthcare connects important parts of the healthcare system, including doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, insurance companies, and other organizations.
This assignment helped me understand how one security weakness can create consequences far beyond a computer system. It required technical knowledge, research, and the ability to explain cybersecurity to people who may not have a technical background. That communication ability is important because cybersecurity professionals often have to explain risks to leadership, employees, customers, and other stakeholders.
Artifact 3: Cybercrime Concept Map
My Cybercrime Concept Map helped me see how individual cybersecurity concepts connect to a larger system. The map included topics such as malware, ransomware, phishing, social engineering, DDoS attacks, botnets, digital forensics, penetration testing, MFA, Zero Trust, artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and critical infrastructure.
Creating the map required me to do more than memorize definitions. I had to determine how technology, criminal behavior, cybersecurity defenses, and prevention relate to one another. My reflection on the assignment explains that the process helped me understand that cybercrime, technology, theory, and prevention overlap rather than existing as separate subjects.
Together, these three artifacts demonstrate that my technical development includes hands-on application, cyberattack analysis, and understanding relationships among cybersecurity concepts.
Skill 2: Analytical and Critical Thinking
My second marketable skill is analytical and critical thinking. Cybersecurity professionals constantly make decisions involving risk. A technical solution may work, but professionals must still determine whether it is effective, appropriate, ethical, affordable, and consistent with organizational or government requirements.
Artifact 4: NIST Cybersecurity Framework Policy Analysis
My NIST Cybersecurity Framework analysis demonstrates how my thinking developed beyond simply identifying cybersecurity requirements. I examined how an organization could determine whether implementation of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework actually improves security.
I proposed measuring factors such as successful incidents, phishing success rates, unpatched vulnerabilities, intrusion detection time, incident response time, recovery time, employee training results, MFA, and access management. I also considered audits, vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, incident-response exercises, and phishing simulations.
An important lesson from this assignment was that compliance does not automatically equal security. An organization can have policies and documentation and still have weak cybersecurity practices. I therefore learned to think about measurable results instead of simply whether an organization can say it follows a framework.
The assignment also required me to consider ethical, political, and social concerns, including privacy, government regulation, organizational independence, and public trust. This showed me that cybersecurity decisions rarely involve technology alone.
Artifact 5: National Cybersecurity Strategy
The National Cybersecurity Strategy artifact moved my analysis from the organizational level to the national level. This assignment required me to consider critical infrastructure, government systems, private organizations, cyber adversaries, regulation, innovation, workforce development, and cooperation between the public and private sectors.
This assignment helped me understand that cybersecurity is connected to national security, economics, politics, and society. Protecting the country from cyber threats cannot be accomplished by one government agency or one group of technical professionals. It requires cooperation among government, businesses, technology companies, cybersecurity professionals, and individuals.
The artifact demonstrates my ability to examine a large cybersecurity problem, consider competing priorities, and evaluate how different parts of society contribute to cybersecurity.
Artifact 6: Zero Days Ethical Case Study
The Zero Days case study challenged me to analyze cybersecurity from an ethical perspective. The assignment examined the conflict between government secrecy and the disclosure of a cyberweapon that could have consequences beyond its intended target.
I applied Rule Utilitarianism to consider whether secrecy or transparency would produce greater benefits for society. This assignment showed me that cybersecurity professionals may encounter situations where there is no simple technical answer.
Ethical reasoning is especially important when working with sensitive systems and information. Professionals must consider confidentiality, national security, privacy, public safety, and the possible consequences of their actions. This artifact demonstrates that my education has prepared me to consider those issues instead of approaching cybersecurity only from a technical perspective.
Skill 3: Research, Communication, and Interdisciplinary Problem-Solving
My third skill is research, communication, and interdisciplinary problem-solving. One of the most important lessons from my degree program is that complicated problems cannot always be understood through one discipline.
Artifact 7: Internet Fraud Analysis
My Internet Fraud assignment required me to research multiple real-world examples of cybercrime and identify common patterns. After examining ten recent news articles, I identified five major themes: online scams and social engineering, digital freedom and surveillance, misinformation, globalization of cybercrime, and the erosion of trust in the digital world.
This artifact strengthened my ability to gather information from different sources and turn it into an organized analysis. It also reinforced the importance of human behavior in cybersecurity. Criminals do not always need advanced technology when they can manipulate people through fear, urgency, trust, or misinformation.
The assignment showed me that understanding cybercrime requires knowledge from cybersecurity as well as psychology, criminology, sociology, law, and communication.
Artifact 8: Interdisciplinary Journey
My Interdisciplinary Journey artifact represents the process I learned for approaching complex problems. The process includes defining the problem, determining why an interdisciplinary approach is necessary, identifying relevant disciplines, researching them, examining different perspectives, identifying conflicts, finding common ground, integrating insights, and communicating the final results.
This process changed the way I think about research. Previously, I might have looked for the answer to a problem within one subject. Interdisciplinary thinking taught me that two disciplines may look at the same issue differently and that those differences can actually help produce a better solution.
I can apply this process directly to cybersecurity. For example, ransomware may appear to be a technical problem, but understanding it completely can require computer science, criminology, psychology, business, economics, law, public policy, and ethics.
Artifact 9: Staged or Real? An Interdisciplinary Study of Cultural Authenticity in Tourism
My IDS 300W final assignment is one of the clearest demonstrations of my interdisciplinary development. Although the subject was tourism rather than cybersecurity, the thinking process is transferable to my professional field.
I examined cultural authenticity using anthropology, psychology, geography, and sociology. Each discipline provided a different perspective on the same problem. I used an interdisciplinary method to identify relevant disciplines, compare their insights, examine conflicts, establish common ground, and develop a more complete explanation.
This assignment was also a learning process for me. In my reflection, I recognized that I initially focused too heavily on summarizing sources separately instead of identifying relationships among the disciplines. As the assignment developed, I learned to organize disciplinary insights, recognize conflicts, establish common ground, and create a synthesis.
That lesson applies directly to cybersecurity. A cybersecurity professional cannot always solve a problem by looking only at the technology. Human behavior, organizational policies, ethics, laws, economics, and social consequences can all influence the best solution.
Developing My E-Portfolio and Understanding My Professional Identity
Creating this ePortfolio required me to do something I do not normally do: stop and look back. While completing individual courses, my main focus was usually finishing the assignment, learning the material, and moving to the next course. IDS 493 required me to look at those assignments together and determine what they say about me as a student and cybersecurity professional.
Nguyen (2013) describes the ePortfolio as more than a storage location for completed assignments. The portfolio can help students connect learning experiences and reflect on their development. My experience creating this portfolio supports that idea. Looking through my previous work allowed me to see connections among assignments that I did not recognize when I originally completed them.
My personal narrative also helped me understand my professional identity. My experiences in government service, cybersecurity, professional certifications, and higher education did not occur separately. They built upon one another. My coursework expanded my technical knowledge while interdisciplinary courses taught me to examine problems through multiple perspectives.
This portfolio therefore represents more than nine assignments. It provides evidence of how my experiences have developed into skills that I can carry into my career.
Conclusion
Looking back on my degree program, I can see a major difference between where I started and where I am today. I entered higher education with professional cybersecurity experience and industry certifications, but my academic journey expanded the way I approach problems. I strengthened my technical knowledge while developing greater ability in research, critical thinking, communication, ethics, policy analysis, and interdisciplinary problem-solving.
IDS 300W was particularly important because it taught me that interdisciplinarity is not simply using information from several subjects. The real value comes from understanding different disciplinary perspectives, identifying conflicts and common ground, and integrating those insights to develop a more complete understanding of a problem.
That approach is valuable in cybersecurity because cybersecurity is not only a technology issue. It involves people, government, business, law, ethics, psychology, criminology, communication, and society. My nine artifacts demonstrate my ability to work across those areas while maintaining a strong cybersecurity foundation.
Completing this ePortfolio also gave me the opportunity to recognize how far I have come. My degree, professional experience, certifications, and academic work now tell one connected story. I am leaving Old Dominion University better prepared not simply because I know more about cybersecurity, but because I have learned how to research problems, evaluate information, communicate my findings, consider different perspectives, and continue learning as technology and cybersecurity threats evolve.
