Weekly Blog 10

Rereading my Week 1 weekly blog my initial expectation of this course was that I was going to do well and learn a lot so that I can gain some knowledge in order for me to move on in my career in being a marriage and family therapist. As it relates to our objectives in class I feel like I did quite well. In the beginning I can admit that I wasn’t as engaged which cause me to get a C on my first exam. (Something I’ve never gotten in a psychology class because I really love Psychology.) But, that motivated me to be more attentive and to be more in depth with my class work. If I were to take this class again I think I would do even better. Right now I have a B but if we were going over the same topics such as nonverbal communication or social cognition I would do great.

The top three that I’ve learned so far in Social Psychology are the importance of nonverbal communication, types of heuristics, and self-regulation. For example, if we were involved in in-person class non-verbal communication could be used during the course by observing our behaviors and analyzing how good students would be in class. Or, we can use the style of heuristics in other courses. For example, I can use the anchoring and adjusting style in my social inequality class because of the uncertainty with being poor in America and adjusting in order to stay afloat.

The styles of heuristics.

Weekly Blog 7: Self-Regulation and Emotional Intelligence

Self-regulation is a concept that makes up emotional intelligence. To me, emotional intelligence is about the process of dealing and expressing all emotions in an articulate and empathetic manner. Displaying emotional intelligence is like examining how you react in social situations or seeing how your emotions impact other people.

Weekly Blog 6: “The Dangerous Ways Ads See Women”

I am not surprised by this presentation at all. Being a Black woman I have always noticed the white-washing of Black celebrities, the constant advertisement of light-skin=better. For example, in the Ted Talk, the presenter, Jean Killbourne, discussed a magazine cover of the queen, Beyoncé. It showed a photoshop of Queen B being lighter than she already was. Beyoncé is already attractive but a lot of people were curious as to why they made her lighter. I have also learned that they display ads according to their gender. If you’re buying a product for a man they have key concepts of being very strong and masculine. Usually displays a strong man with a beard. However for a woman. They’re mostly being seductive and they’re thin and white. Apparently, it’s the optimum of perfection.

Weekly Blog 5: Communicator Credibility and Attractiveness

20+ Commonly Used Advertising Techniques That Work [2021]

McDonald’s: This is an attractive source. It shows what the viewer would think would be appealing. Then they can describe it in a positive or negative way.

About Science.gov

This is a credible source. “Science.gov is a gateway to U.S. government science information. The portal offers free access to research and development (R&D) results and scientific and technical information from scientific organizations across 13 federal agencies.” It has information from databases and the government and only provides an expert opinion.

SlimFast: This is a not credible source it’s on the official SlimFast website and she has her own testimony. She said: “When I began the SlimFast Plan I knew it was the plan for me. I have tried several weight loss plans and fad diets through the years. This plan fit my crazy, busy lifestyle perfectly. My first goal I set for myself was to lose 30 pounds.”

Weekly Blog 4: Exam 1 Test Results

I scored a 76 out of 100 on my first Social Psychology exam. One of the questions I got wrong was this: “Which of the following is a downside of schemas?” To which I answered “They can cause us to process social information at a slower rate.” After doing proper research I learned that an answer could be that the downside to schemas is being to biased an overlooking information.

The aftermath to this reviewing my test answers made me realize that I could do a little better in studying. Maybe I could highlight my key concepts in my notes and start reviewing them for a longer period of time. My problem is that I study very close to the exam day so I don’t get a lot of time to really soak in the information that I learned.

Weekly Blog 3: “Soul Meets Body”

The connection between relationships and music is huge. I personally think that music is that background noise that can set a mood. It’s the background noise when there’s nothing being said at all. Reading this article got to me because I’m a big lover of music and I want to become a marriage and family therapist. In my opinion, since music is a big part of who I am and how I express myself if my partner or friends says that they hate my music. There’s a possibility that in the long-run, we won’t be getting along. The type of music I listen to shares my innermost thoughts about certain topics or some are just songs that were played in a memory. All of my close friends and family have a song that I relate to them.

My Soundtrack

  1. De’Jour (friend) – Drama by Erykah Badu (every time we drive late at night we play this song. 2. Carol (mom) – Open My Heart by Yolanda Adams (she played this song when she was pregnant with me) 3. Evelyn (grandma) – Gin and Juice by Snoop Dogg (it was her favorite song before she died) 4. Nya (best friend) – Get That Bag by Asap Mob (it was our favorite song to play 5. Cydni (friend) – Female Goat by Lakeyah ft. City Girls (favorite song on a roadtrip) 6. The Squad (friend group) – Lay It Down by Reaction Band (our favorite song together)

Weekly Blog 2: “What Kind of Student Am I?”

I would describe myself as the slightly above average student. If I were to be asked this question a couple years ago, then I would’ve said I’m a last minute kind of student. As of right now I feel really confident in my abilities as a student. I’ve come up with a plan to complete all my homework assignments a couple days before they’re due. I additionally check my emails and notes often and I keep better contact with my professors. Although, I still feel like I can improve in some areas like test preparation and detailed work instead of just turning in the basics of the assignments. I would like to start going the extra mile as it relates to academics.

For this weekly blog, we were asked to calculate our “General Self-Efficacy Scale”. Basically, the higher you score, the more you’re considered self-sufficient. The score ranges from 10-40; with 40 being the most self-sufficient. My score was a 30; which means I consider myself pretty self-sufficient. I am quick to solve problems and I usually pick the option(s) that have the least amount of consequences.

Weekly Blog 1

During the week of February 1st, 2021 through February 6th, 2021 I have learned about Social Perception. The photo below is my notes about a subtopic I am learning right now, titled: “Basic Concepts of Nonverbal Communication.” Here, I’ve written facial expressions, the accuracy of recognizing facial expressions, eye contact, body language, and touching. One thing that I found interesting is that there are five basic emotions of expressions: Anger, fear, happiness, sadness, and disgust. I’m excited to learn more about this topic.
