How Long Can You Wait?
Hall (1973) suggested that cultures differ in their time perspective and orientation. He analyzed differences among people of different cultures in their use of time and how these differences manifested themselves in actual behavioral practices with such context as business. We interact with various people in our daily lives. However, the point is whether people present different behaviors to different people in terms of time. Suppose you have an appointment to meet each of the following people somewhere outside. If your partner did not show up at the appointed time, how long can you wait or are you willing to wait? Write the minutes you can wait for each person below.
Target Person | Minutes |
Your parent | 30-50 |
Your older sibling | 30-45 |
Your boyfriend or girlfriend | 30-50 |
Your best friend | 30-50 |
Your colleague | 30-55 |
Your client | 45-55 |
Your boss | 45-1 hour |
Did you find any differences in the results? Yes.
If you said “yes” in the previous question, who will you wait for the longest time and who will you wait for the shortest time? Why? While I care about my siblings and view them as important, I would wait the longest for my boss and the shortest amount of time for my older sibling because business (careers, jobs, success, etc.) is important and my job may be on the line if I just choose not to wait for my boss. This assignment is ranked fifth in my top artifacts because it allowed me to think deeply about how I value my time and who I’d consider more important regarding time which is, of course, dependent upon the situation.

Color & Emotion
Do you find any similarities or differences in the colors listed below? First, categorize the following 12 colors into groups, and state the rationale of your categorization.
Black, Blue, Brown, Gray, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple, Red, Violet, White, Yellow
Category 1: Blue, Green, White and Brown.
Rationale: These colors remind me of nature.
Category 2: Orange, Pink, Purple, Violet, Red, and Yellow.
Rationale: These colors are more vibrant and give me an overall feeling of happiness or excitement.
Category 3: Black and Gray.
Rationale: These colors categorize with each other easily because gray is a lighter shade of black. These colors make me feel sad, bored, or scared because I relate them to a cloudy day (bad weather) or darkness.
Write emotion words which you will associate with each of the following colors.
- Black: Fear 7. Pink: Love
- Blue: Calm 8. Purple: Comfortable
- Brown: Nostalgia 9. Red: Angry
- Gray: Depressed 10. Violet: Intuitive
- Green: Jealous/sick 11. White: Peaceful
- Orange: Excited 12. Yellow: Happy
Did you find any association between your categorization in (1) and the results of (2)? Yes, for example, I associated the color gray with feeling depressed and my rationale for putting the colors black and gray together were that they reminded me of a cloudy day which makes me feel sad. This activity is rated fourth in my top artifacts because it was a fun activity that allowed me to see that different people and cultures categorize specific colors with specific emotions that may differ from how I categorize them.

Personality in Context
Describe past episodes where your behaviors did not match your personality traits. Describe them in detail, such as how you behaved, what you said, etc. in each episode.
Story : About a few months or so ago, I attended an ODU event where students that had been granted scholarships were invited to attend to celebrate their achievements and to meet the people who created the scholarship(s) that were awarded to them. Everyone was dressed in formal attire and people of all ages were present. Upon walking into the dining room, I noticed the formal atmosphere and immediately fixed my posture and carried myself with as much professionalism as I could muster. I made sure to walk slowly and take my seat as elegantly as I could. I greeted an elderly couple that was sitting across from me, “Hello, how are you both doing?”. And as more people came to sit down at our table, I took initiative by greeting them and making sure to make and hold more eye contact than I otherwise normally would. In addition, I had a conversation with two women about my goals and hopes for the future and, in return, I made sure to actively listen to them express their hopes and dreams as well.
Look at the Table 6.2 (p.132) in the textbook. Which subtraits in the table, do you think, were reflected in your behaviors shown in the episodes? The subtraits that I think were reflected in my story are achievement striving, self-discipline, positive emotions, activity, warmth, and modesty.
Do you think that we are likely to reflect consistent personality in our behaviors or do you think that context influences our personality? I think that context influences our personality because our behavior tends to change depending on the context we are in. For example, when I am with my parents or my boyfriend’s parents I am more respectful and mindful of my words and I am also more reserved in manner. However, when I am around my boyfriend or my friends, I am more extraverted and am less likely to worry about my word choice (casual). This activity is rated third in my top artifacts because it required me to apply the knowledge I’ve learned in my courses to my own life and, thus, evaluate how certain personality traits are more likely to appear in specific situations.

Happiness
What makes you happy? Do you think that at different times of your life, different things made you happy? Do you think your happiness relates to better physical health? Or do you think better physical health leads to your happiness? Many things make me happy. Receiving my paycheck, spending time with loved ones, relaxing, listening to music, eating great tasting food, being out in nature, etc. I personally believe that happiness relates to better physical health AND vice versa. To elaborate, going through health issues can put a damper on one’s self-esteem and overall happiness. Inversely, stress is not good for your overall health, so, being happier and as stress free as possible can have positive effects on your life. This activity is rated second in my top artifacts because I believe happiness is important. Many people now-a-days are moving through life way too fast (not taking the time to enjoy the little things life has to offer), putting others down, putting themselves down, and spreading negativity overall. For as long as I can remember my goal in life has been to make everyone in the world happy. While I now realize that said goal may be fairly difficult, I still try my best to be positive towards the people I interact with and make them smile. You never know what may be going on in someone’s life, so, sometimes just a simple smile may be enough to brighten up that person’s day.

Watch Amy Cuddy’s Ted Talk “Your Body Language May Shape Who You Are.”
Video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks-_Mh1QhMc
Discuss your takeaway from this video. How do some of the points in the video align with what you read in the Culture, Language, and Communication chapter? This video about body language was a great one! I stand behind the idea of “fake it until you make it”. While it might not work for everyone, or become permanent as far as results are concerned, it definitely does have an almost immediate effect. I think of myself as naturally introverted and I tend to make “low power” poses when I am in public, such as a classroom. For the past few years I have been constantly trying to fake confidence until I make it. I can gladly say that while the process of actually becoming a confident person takes time, doing this has had a positive effect on me thus far. It is interesting how our body language can affect our mood. I always find myself tilting my chin up higher and sitting up straighter when I want to feel better about myself. The points in the video align with what I read in the Culture, Language and Communication chapter because nonverbal communication and its meanings are discussed in depth.
