TAP has been a part of the Roanoke Valley for over 50 years and was founded by Capell Brand (Total Action for Progress, 2019). TAP was introduced to the Roanoke Valley after the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 and has been serving 11 different counties since (Total Action for Progress, 2019). TAP is a non-profit organization and is ran by a Board of Directors who are elected officials from the community (Total Action for Progress, 2019). TAP has multiple programs that many individuals in the community are apart of. They vary from educational programs to re-entry programs for ex-offenders. TAP does not want individuals to depend on their services for a lifetime; they just want to be a stepping stone for their success.
TAP’s mission reads as follows “TAP helps individuals and families achieve economic and personal independence through education, employment, affordable housing, and safe and healthy environments” (Total Action for Progress, 2019). This statement tells me that TAP wants individuals to achieve their goals and be well rounded. TAP works with low-income families in the area, and a majority of participants receive services like Section 8 and SNAP (Taylor, 2019).
I’m interested in working with TAP because of their relationship with the city of Roanoke. I’m from the Roanoke area and dislike the fact that many people do not think they can succeed. The same families rely on government assistance and its only because it’s a learned behavior from previous generations. I want to provide them with the resources to do better than the older generation. A lot of individuals think that relying on assistance programs is their only option. I just want to be the one to encourage them to do better. I’m specifically interested in the Head Start program TAP has. I want to work with the children and their parents, so I can introduce them to a new way of thinking.
