This “war on information” is not new news to me. Though after reading the article, I have acquired more knowledge on the catastrophic effects of “war” in social cybersecurity. It is evident that war on information can jeopardize trust between societies and communities, but far more drastic is the trust implied between governments and their constituents (Beskow & Carley, 2019). This can lead to distrust and a multi-frontal approach on attack by outside entities and civil unrest. Pointing out that traditional cybersecurity threats and attacks relied on attacking technology, the threats of attacking the cognitive aspects of people through technology calls for greater concern.

The authors argue that traditional cybersecurity, which focuses on protecting information systems, is insufficient in addressing these challenges. Instead, they advocate for a comprehensive approach that includes social cybersecurity, aimed at safeguarding the cognitive aspects of individuals and societies. The consequences of neglecting this domain are profound, potentially undermining national security by eroding public trust in institutions and disrupting societal cohesion. To counter these threats, the authors recommend that military leaders and policymakers develop strategies that integrate technical defenses with measures to protect and strengthen the social fabric against cyber-mediated manipulations (Beskow & Carley, 2019).
