The two economic theories that relate to this letter are rational choice and laissez-fare theories. Rational choice relates to this letter because the business seems to be in direct control of their cybersecurity posture. Per the module, the definition of rational choice “,Rational choice – individuals/businesses make choices in their best interest (pleasure versus pain) (CYSE 201,)” hence, their choices to implement cyber defense infrastructure was their direct responsibility. There is no place for the term immunity to be associated with cybersecurity and its risks, threats, and attacks that cybersecurity is associated. However, there are risk mitigation, transference, and acceptance techniques that business, like the example, can decide and act upon to further defend themselves and their stakeholders. Lasissez-fare theory states, per the module “,version of classical theory that suggests “government should not intervene in the economy except to protect individuals’ inalienable rights” (Amadeo, 2021) (CYSE 201),” meaning in this example, the business themselves, are responsible or take responsibility to prevent further harm to stakeholders, inform stakeholders, and perform the necessary cyber incidence response to address the incident or attack. Government, then, in this scenario does not step-in, per say, and dictate the proceding actions for the company.

The two social science theories are social contract and again, rational choice theory. In social contract theory, this assumes that there is an underlying agreement that the company and its customers, the company does not neglect its customers. In this example, in this context, the customers, prior to being affiliated with business to the Glass Washer Parts, assumingly agree, both parties, that the company has implemented cybersecurity safeguards to protect transactions and consumer data to their best abilities. This assumption is based then, on the social contract, that is implicit rather than explicit, that Glass Washer Parts has, to their best of their knowledge and abilities, implemented secure defenses from cyber attacks and threats. Mentioned again is rational choice, also part of social science as with economic theories. In this example, the company, has made rational choices to address their cybersecurity. They have implemented cybersecurity tools based on their careful analysis and evaluation of the cybersecurity threats that may affect their business.
