Internship Reflection Paper 1

Caleb Mayo

Interning at the Library of Virginia has been a very good opportunity for me in many ways. The first day had me very nervous, as I did not know what to expect, but as the day went on, I was more accustomed to it. From the start, I was a bit unsure due to the nature of my internship. Unlike some of my fellow interns at the Library of Virginia who were going to be working alongside their supervisors in the library, I have been mostly working from home. That aspect of this internship provided much flexibility for me, and I am able to do more in my day. One of the first tasks my supervisor gave me was to read through the abundance of Information Security and Risk Management Policies and Standards that the Library of Virginia must work in accordance to. Understanding the guidelines and requirements for each aspect of the Library’s cybersecurity was needed so I was able to work more efficiently, and helped with my Auditing Skills. One of my favorite tasks that I learned to do was to use a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) Software known as Log360. In doing so, I practiced writing scripts for the Event logger to track and notify me of specific alerts according to the Information Security Standard that state agencies use. As a matter of fact, the Library was rolling out the new software that same week and I was able to sit in on the meetings explaining the purpose and use of the software, how they were integrating it into the systems, and was able to help create some of the rules and alerts that the Library would use everyday now. The only thing I can mention about the internship that I am still working on is working by myself for long periods of time. However, it is still a very good experience in how I would be working for many cybersecurity roles. In conclusion, the start of my internship has been a fun and exciting process.
