Find out what’s GLOWIG with Sara Maynard!!
Sara Maynard is the Director of the Nuclear Program at Old dominion University. Sara is currently working at Old Dominion University and Norfolk General Hospital as the Chief Nuclear Medicine Technologist; she is working the graveyard shift in her free time. Sara graduated from Old Dominion in 2014, with a Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Medicine Technology and Psychology. Sara was influenced by her parents; her mom is nurse, and her dad is an engineer and she really like both aspects of each career path. Sara’s was at first choice was nursing but it was a little to gory for her and engineering was too much math, she’s more of a science person so in the Nuclear Medicine Program was a happy medium where she could do both. She enjoys nuclear medicine because she still getting the patient interaction and still has the math portion while after taking the images there is some processing and calculations to do to on the images. She really likes this program above the CAT scan program because she gets to spend more tie with each patient. Her role in the hospital are taking images of people and in the department, she organizes an interview process of getting into the program and teaching classes within the program. She loves multitasking and likes the fact that every day is different, Sara especially loves working at Norfolk general because there are many studies done. She finds it really finds the studies fascinating because each graph I’ll be different. There were only a couple things that she would consider the hard part of being a Nuclear Medicine Technology was the day-to-day life in the hospital environment, so have to jungle the time and care spent with each patient is difficult and still trying to get everything done on a timely matter. Then secondly the job availability in this area could be difficult to get a full time right out of college. She said be prepared with what your program or job title entails and be ready for new and exciting experiencing in the everyday aspect of the job. Sara also mentions to be in love with what you’re doing. The biggest part I learned from this interview that it’s okay to change your mind and want to explore more options in the field that you are planning to go into. I also learned about the programs expectations on those who were accepted into the Nuclear Medicine Program and what each course and semester look like in the program. I loved talking with Mrs. Maynard, she is very nice and outgoing, and I will hopefully be able to exceed in her program in Nuclear Medicine.
