The Accounting major offered by ODU relates to cybersecurity because the computers will contain sensitive bank and tax information. If stolen the customers could be victim of identity theft. Depending on how many clients the accountant has, there would be a huge security breach. That information could be sold on the dark web or used to commit credit card fraud. Having knowledge about cybersecurity can help accountants secure their clients information and prevent attacks on their systems.
Another major offered by ODU that can relate to the cybersecurity major is Medical Technology. Medical Technology is used in the labs and the professionals inspect samples taken from the patient. In the computer database is logged all of the patient’s medical history. Social security numbers, addresses, patient’s full names, and insurance providers etc., are also located in their databases. If hacked, I imagine that would be a hacker’s dream come true. This information could be stolen and sold on the dark web or used to make fake identification cards.
In Old Dominions Department of Teaching and Learning, there is the option to major in teaching. Teaching relates to cybersecurity in a plethora of ways. Teachers have their student’s grades, addresses, social security numbers when enrolling the student and parents’ information. By hacking into schools’ databases health records could be leaked or grades can be changed. According to the Hechinger report, in November of 2020, due to remote learning hacking became more prevalent. Hackers posted students health information in Norfolk, VA (Barshay 2020).
In the Political Science major, if students move on to politicians it puts them at a higher risk to be targeted. Political Science relates to cybersecurity by having delicate and sensitive information on policies, campaigns and other sources of information. Political Science majors would have lots of folds and papers, it would be riskier carrying them around. By having a risk-free system or knowing how to implement certain preventative measures in cybersecurity would allow them to be safer and more organized.
