When storing electronic information about individuals, you can run into some ethical issues. One of these issues could be the risk of a security breach. Storing electronic data about individuals means that the information will not always be secure, this goes for a lot of other methods of storing information as well. These methods include using notebooks to carry information or carrying around hard drives. When storing information electronically, you deal with the risk of hackers. If a security breach does occur, all of the information is at risk and can land in anyone’s hands. Someone could sell the information on the dark web or just use it for their own personal use. Another ethical issue that arises when storing electronic information is a possible invasion of privacy. Depending on what type of data you are storing on someone, you could have access to personal information that could infringe on someone’s privacy. Also depending how many people have access to that information goes back to my first point on how it could be leaked. Too many people having access to the information can also become a security concern and can lead to issues such as identity theft for example. Electronically storing information can also lead to it being deleted. Whether that be purposefully or accidentally, the deletion of important records of individuals can become an ethical issue. Electronically storing information also has the ability to have information lost on the device or placed into the wrong documents. Personal information can be grouped with another individual, thus causing a confidentiality issue. Another ethical issue that arises when electronically storing individual’s information is the compatibility of the devices used. Will the material be safely secured and properly monitored on the device? This can be a concern of some individuals who do not trust technology as a whole (this may be more common among the older generations).
