Cyber technology impacts interactions between offenders and victims in a multitude of ways. With the internet and cyber technology, it makes the cases harder to prove. If the offender is knowledgeable in IT, they would know how to cover their footprints. Basic offenders may do the same as well. Covering their footprints could be, offending under an alias, using multiple phones, accounts, or locations to offend, or impersonating someone else. If an offender has been stalking someone for quite a while, or if they know the victim personally, they will have an idea of who the victim interacts with. If the offender knows the victim personally, then they may know who the victim does not get along with, if the victim does not get along with a particular person. The offender can then impersonate said person, and act as though they’re the ones sending the messages instead of the actual offender. This would be more believable by the victim and may cause some confusion or for the offender to remain their cover. Another way cyber technology impacts how victims and offenders interact is for websites. The particular websites that I am inferring are Club Penguin, or MovieStarPlanet. These are websites with an open world and chat feature. Thus, allowing anyone to communicate as long as you know their user handle. This provides a way for offenders to harass or stalk individuals no matter the age. There is not an age verification process that one needs to do before creating an account. This makes the open world and chat feature unsafe for minors and any adults that may play on this game. As a child this was one of my biggest concerns, the fact that strangers could openly talk to you on the internet and have access to information such as your state, country, birthday, and name.
