Should the internet be considered a human right?

The internet is essential to my human rights for the purpose of communication. Communication involves expressing myself which means I am exercising my freedom of expression. There are different ways to express oneself, but I express myself mostly on social media. Using social media to express myself requires an internet connection. I choose to express myself on social media because more people can see how I view things and form an opinion. I also use social media to network and connect with who I am similar to. Connecting with people I am similar to or even dissimilar to means that I am exercising my freedom of association.

The internet should definitely be considered a human right. It should be added to the UHDR, the constitution, and any other document that explains human rights and lists them as well. The internet should be considered a human right because it is a way of communicating, networking, receiving important information, and keeping track of what is going on in the world around you whether it is about politics, natural disaster, or even a sale at your favorite store. There is no privacy on the internet, once something is posted on the internet it is there forever. I am not opposed nor supportive of internet privacy because I understand that in case of an emergency it is okay to invade someone’s internet privacy, but only under dyer situations like a cyber or terrorist attack. It is wrong to invade someone’s internet privacy for reasons that are not deemed as dyer. Invading someone’s property just to do it is a violation of someone’s human rights as well as rights of the internet. You can go back and find it in the next year or maybe even the next twenty years, so being mindful of what we put on the internet is important with respect to our freedom of expression.
