The Story of Beauty and Terror in Beauty and Terror in Charlottesville: A Reconing (Part 1) by UVA Alumni La TaSha Levy, explains the dark prejudice acts that demonstrated towards the African-American population at UVA. the story highlights the shocking racist events and landmarks around the campus of UVA. What caught my attention was the mentioning of the Thomas Jefferson center that included into the campus for african american students to go to for academic achievement. It was labeled as the Thomas Jefferson “Academic Village”. I find this contradiction considering that in history Jefferson was a slave owner. Thus, with him carrying this title as a slave owner, he never had the best interest in slave education which leads to Black Inferiority. This exemplifies not only a lie but, plays into an oxymoron as well. Levy later experiences issues from the Cavalier Daily, which is an UVA news post explaining the current issues around campus, using inappropriate remarks on behalf of the columnist that works for them. The Remarks were racist and aimed towards the African-American community of UVA. Yet, this was supported by the Cavalier by using the law of “opinion” and right to “free speech”. This shows how willful ignorance and veiled hate among the whites at UVA. Because of these issues, “Isolated Incidents” towards black students that attend UVA would happen yearly including physical violence when she attempted to run for the president of the university. Remarks in her campaign such as “nigger” would be present. In the midst of these tragic events that took place on campus, Levy life affected to the extent that she was terrified to step back on the campus of UVA. This reminds me of an similar issue that happened on the campus of Old Dominion University (ODU) when a student made a rap song that aimed towards the African-American community of ODU on behalf of President Donald Trump’s Inaugeration. The student made the threat towards “Niggers” which is a racist slander towards african americans. This was a disturbing event for the african american community of ODU. With the conclusion of the issues at hand this brings up the question “ Are Predominately White Institutions a safe place for Minorities to attend for a 4 year education.?”
