Oct 29: Resnais, Night and Fog

Resnais, Night and Fog is a documentary film that focuses on the holocaust. The film shows images of the holocaust from archives and the aftermath of the holocaust. There is music in the film that is almost agonizing to here; however, the music plays a key role in setting the mood of the holocaust in the film. As it gets closer to the soldiers, the music becomes more intense and even more agonizing to hear. The producer of the film used the camera to show certain images in the holocaust. The image that stood out to me most was the beginning when he describe Auschwitz as peaceful place. It is ironic that the concentration camp was peaceful especially considering the horrible crimes committed against Jews and other minorities during the holocaust.

The holocaust is a trauma shared collectively by the world. Using film as a way to commemorate it was a brilliant idea. Too often than not, human rights atrocities, like the holocaust,  are commemorated through ways such as monuments or statues are good ways for remembering history; however, who they stand for and are meant to commemorate is often misinterpreted. Creating a film, writing a book, or even a play tells both sides of the story.
