Top Artifact 1:
The item selected was Creme of Nature Argan Oil intensive conditioning treatment and shampoo. I chose this item because most African Americans have very coarse hair that often eats up the nutrient put into it before the nutrients can reach the scalp. These two hair products are very popular among African Americans because they help moisturize our hair and scalp. African Americans care a lot about their hair and these items amongst others are always used, which is why I chose these items to represent my culture. I liked this item this artifact the most because it really required me to think long and hard about what can be said about the African American culture through this item. I learned that there are many things that represent the African American culture other than music, and the history of African Americans.
Top Artifact 2:
The second item I chose for my Top artifacts page is the activity from module three. After reading the statements I found that a lot of my beliefs and values come from my parents. However, there were some things that I valued that my parents did not such as: team work vs. efficiency in a group project and asking an expert for advice when we encounter an issue related to that field. I chose this item because this activity help decipher between who I am as an individual and what my parents taught me growing up. I believe it is important to separate yourself from your parents when you get older, but also to carry the lessons you were taught with you.
Top Artifact 3:
Another favorite artifact was the activity from module 10. That activity focused on time and the amount you waited for someone who is running late. My parents were given the most amount of time while a colleague received the least amount of time. I liked this activity because it helped me decipher between people who genuinely care about me and people who do not. I believe it is important to know who you have in your circle. It is also important to know who has had the most impact on your life.
Top Artifact 4:
This artifact was about happiness. I chose this as a top artifact because it helped me remember all the good in my life, and as reflection of how far I have came. I have matured a lot in such a short period of time since I have come to Old Dominion University and what seemed important to me growing up is now a silly memory. This assignment taught me how to live in the moment without dwelling in the past.
Top Artifact 5:
This is the final artifact. This artifact is from module. The activity was to look at a list of occupations and write whether or not you thought a female would have the job or a male. I like this activity because it pointed out my own gender biases. This activity taught me how I can recognize my bias and use it in a way that is beneficial to others rather than beneficial to me and my beliefs.
