While completing this activity many of the talks my father and I would have while I was young and currently came to mind. As I said in Weekly Blog 2, my father is a New Yorker. Many of the stories I heard of my father’s life experiences took place there. Question 1 is a statement that neither my father nor I would ever agree with. A clean version of a saying I frequently heard him say growing up was “I’ve been around bums and billionaires, and I learned from both just the same, if not more from the bum.” That simple statement taught me that people are more than what they achieve and who they appear to be.

This activity helped me realize that my father instilled in me values that on the outside seem individualistic, but also made sure I had meaningful and realistic experiences to prepare me for the “real world”. Another saying my father had, “You can fall in the same hole twice as long as you learn from it.” He and I both believe that reflecting and learning from past experiences strengthens your future. Many of the values on the list did not align with my father’s or my own values.

In the current day, most of these occupations are not solely based on gender. There are now male make-up artists but it is still seen as a job that women hold. School teachers are considered to be a woman’s job now when years ago anything to do with education was strictly for males. This is the case for many jobs now, with the previous limitations and gender stereotypes removed from occupations.

I was surprised to see certain answers from my partner and me that differed. For example, when I think of designers I think of people like Steve Madden whereas my partner thought of Donatella Versace. I thought of Chefs being women because I grew up watching the Food Network with women chefs like Rachel Ray, whereas my partner thought of chefs like Gordon Ramsey. My partner and I talked about our answers for dancers and agreed that the genre of dance that comes to mind or that one enjoys can influence the answer to this question.

Sitting in my car with the moon roof open, looking at the stars with a good music playlist, hanging out with my dog and my nephew, and laughing with my best friend make me happy. I do believe that at different points in my life different things made me happy. I believe that happiness and physical health can lean on one another as a combination instead of as separate causes of happiness.

I chose a picture of my nephew and my dog as my representative photo. In this picture, my nephew was just being goofy and my dog sat down next to him to be included in the picture. Those two are very close.
