This course has given a great understanding of how this language works and the culture. My professor did a great job explaining and comparing the two different cultures and their similarities and differences. The Spanish culture is very interesting and I definitely look forward to learning more about it in the future.
Exploring Culture
A lot of the homework assignments helped me gain a better understanding of this culture because it had real life videos of how people lived their lives in their culture.
Engaging in Communities
I think it is very important to engage in your community because it will help you and everyone surrounding you become a better person.
Interpersonal Communication
In this course the oral assignments that we had to do through vhl helped me a lot with my understanding of how conversations work. Also the videos in the activities that showed real life fluent Spanish speakers conversations allowed me to model myself after the way they talk.
This course allowed us to interact and speak in Spanish to each other quite often and that helped learn the language a lot easier. The discussion boards that we were assigned were great activities for us to converse with one another. I felt like with each oral assignment we had throughout the semester it gave me a chance to get better and excel in learning the language.
Presentational Speaking
Some of the speaking activities I completed this semester for this course we’re very beneficial for my learning of this subject. The oral conversations we had with our classmates helped me the most.
I would say that the most challenging part of my oral presentations this semester was knowing when to use the right verbs and not using them out of place. A lot of the times I could understand what was being said but when it came time for me to reply I would get my words mixed up just because of lack of experience.
Presentational Writing
In English, give a very brief 2-3-line description of the presentational communication of compositions, pamphlets, blogs, flyers, stories, articles, and any other written presentation activities you completed this semester inside or outside of class for or related to your Spanish learning. Include a copy of a written presentational activity you produced? (See Modes of Communication link for description and examples).
Then, in a paragraph, write a reflection that includes each of the activities you described above in which you explain how you have grown with each assignment or activity. What became easier and what was difficult? How did you overcome the difficulties? What did you excel at and why? How could you do better next time?
Interpretive Listening
This semester we had a lot of different listening activities that we were required to do. On VHL we had countless listening activities that required us to listen and get the right answer.
The listening activities were quite challenging for me in the beginning because I had absolutely so idea what was trying to be said. But as the course went on, hearing someone speak Spanish in the listening activities actually enhanced my ability to speak the language just because I had heard someone else say a word.
Interpretive Reading
Outside of this class, I have found myself reading some Spanish news articles. Because of this course, it allowed me to be able to understand what they were trying to say. Before taking this course I would have no clue about what is being said.
Being able to read and converse in a foreign language has given me confidence. To me having knowledge in all different aspects of life is like power. With no knowledge in the Spanish language I felt helpless trying to read and talk in Spanish, but now I feel confident because of what I have learned in this course.
