SPAN 102

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Instructions

Exploring Culture

A practice that helped me gain understanding of cultural perspective was lingo learning activities we did throughout this semester. This allowed me to look directly into specific spanish speaking countries and see how they live their lives.

This practice allowed me to appreciate how each country lived their lives differently, while speaking the same language. I also enjoyed comparing their cultures to my own, while there were many differences, I was also able to find similarities. These practices challenged my worldwide view because it forced me to open my mind up and think as if I were in the shoes of the people in these foreign countries, it made me ask myself would I be living the same way? It definitely made me work through some of the stereotypes I had in mind concerning these some of these countries, one example would be how some spanish speaking people can be aggressive but learning more about them it showed me that they are the same as myself.

Engaging in Communities

I think it is very important to engage in your immediate and global community because there is so much negativity in the world and anything that you can do to make a positive impact on society is going to benefit generations to come.

One thing I like to do in my community is give back to the youth my sharing my knowledge and passion for the game of football. I take any chance I get to train and coach the youth football teams in my hometown.

Interpersonal Communication

Throughout this semester I really enjoyed many different activities that made me communicate with my peer speaking spanish. The talkabroad assignments to me were really cool because it was the first time I ever spoke to someone who speaks spanish as their natural language and I benefited a lot hearing them saying certain words.

The TalkAbroad assignment was the most beneficial for me this semester and it helped me out a lot with my pronunciation of words. Hearing someone who speaks fluently in spanish allowed me to hear exactly how certain words are supposed to sound. I also enjoyed doing the discussion post this semester because I was able to communicate with my classmates and get to know a little about them while also using the spanish language for some parts.

Presentational Speaking

A presentational speaking activity that I did and enjoyed this semester was the TalkAbroad activity. This activity allowed me to have real life interactions with someone of the spanish speaking language.

I feel that during my second TalkAbroad activity I really excelled the most. For my first TalkAbroad assignment I was a little nervous and intimidated which caused me to mess up a little regarding my pronunciation. These assignments helped me tremendously because I was able to hear exactly how certain words are supposed to be announced and it allowed me to become a better spanish speaker.

Presentational Writing

Throughout the semester I read many different blogs regarding spanish speaking countries. These allowed me to get a better understanding of how they live their life and what differences we have in our lives.

The particular activity I am talking about is from lingro learning. Throughout the semester the lingro learning would require us to research a spanish speaking country and talk about certain aspects of their life. I found this interesting because I learned a lot about their many different cultures.

Interpretive Listening

A listening activity that I benefited from this semester was the listening activities through lingro learning. Many of the assignments required us to listen to a story or question in spanish and find the answer to it.

While taking this course this semester a way I found that benefited my learning of the spanish speaking language is I started to listen to a spanish speaking podcast called How to Spanish Lessons & Podcast. From listening to this podcast I was able to learn more in depth of how spanish speaking people live their day to day life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRYkCKKIRZU

Interpretive Reading

A story I read this semester that really stuck out to me was one that I read outside of this class called Aura. I really wanted to challenge myself by reading this story because I knew it was going to be difficult to understand. It took me three tries to fully understand the message, but it was well worth it.

Fuentes, C., Kemp, L., Fuentes, C., & Fuentes, C. (1986). Aura. Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

While reading this story there were many things that were unclear to me because my lack of knowledge regarding the spanish speaking language. Something I did to overcome this was re-read the story twice and write down all of the words that didn’t make sense to me so I could start piecing the story together. My takeaway from this experience was that if you challenge yourself you will be surprised with the end result.
