At Old Dominion University, There is a multitude of different majors and minors being offered. For the major of Cybersecurity, there are many other majors that are offered that can be somewhat similar or they can tie into Cybersecurity. The first major that I’d say related to Cybersecurity is computer science. Whilethe two courses might be different branches of technology, cybersecurity and computer science still have the same kind of root classes. These “root classes” can include learning Python, other networking languages, networks, and web developing. These courses can be applied toward computer science, cybersecurity, and even computer engineering majors. That brings me to the next major, Computer Engineering. Computer engineering is also similar in the sense that a lot of the beginning classes are very similar and/or the same. Cybersecurity and computer engineering differences are only really in what each area spealize in. Cybersecurity students will learn security of computer systems but will also learn more about the programming part in computers. Computer engineering students would learn more about the security measures for computer systems. The primary role for a computer engineer is to write code to create computer programs. Computer engineers will learn to use coding languages such as Python and JavaScript to create both mobile and computer applications to perform a specific task. The next major that is similar to Cybersecurity is Cyber Operations. In Cyber Operations, you learn “skills and proficiencies that are critical to intelligence, military and law enforcement organizations authorized to perform these specialized operations.” The last major that is similar to Information Systems and Technology. Information technology uses computer networks, hardware, and software to store and share digital information. This is fairly similar to what is done in Cybersecurity.In General, Between the 4 other majors listed, they all have similarities to Cybersecurity, but have differences that makes them original in their respective areas.
