When companies and agencies want to store information, specifically consumer information, there becomes an argument about ethics. Like anything in this world, saving information about consumers has to be looked at from an ethical sense. Yes, saving the information to a cloud for example will make retrieving data easier. The concern comes from who exactly has access to that data and how exactly is it stored. Data breaches and insecurely storing individuals’ data can ruin the trust of consumers. With that being said, some of the issues with the saving of user data electronically would be: Inappropriate use of the data, selling of users’ data to third party companies, keeping users’ data regardless of whether they use the services or not, and not announcing to users that their data has been breached. In regards to inappropriate uses of users’ data, it’s essentially an action in which consumer data is collected and used in a way that does not outline the original way that the said data was to be collected. The inappropriate use of the data collected is usually governed by laws or corporate cybersecurity policies. Unfortunately, even with said laws and policies in place, the potential for inappropriate data use is always growing. Next, selling of data to third party companies. All companies gather their consumer data to make a profit from any issues that arise from the collected data. one one hand, some companies get this data and don’t sell it. On the other hand, companies sell this data in bulk to different advertisers. Next, keeping user data longer than necessary. Companies that collect data may tend to keep information from you stored. When older consumer data is being stored, it can make said companies larger targets for cyber attacks. Finally, the last ethical issue would be if companies did not make their users aware that there was a data breach. For most companies, a data breach can mean the end of the world, but if the users in the system aren’t made aware of a said data breach then that in itself can be a huger problem.
