Criminal justice and cybercrime certainly have some connections. For the most part, technology plays a huge role in crimes. Most crimes that are committed in today’s age are mainly through some form of technology. Like a regular crime such as robbing a bank, if you commit a cybercrime, you will be punished the same way as a bank robber. It could be argued that cybercrimes are inherently punished harsher. There is a lot of damage that can be caused by committing crimes on the internet. Until somewhat recently, there were no laws that defined what is or isn’t a cybercrime or what the punishment of committing any form of cybercrime should be. With the inclusion of these laws, crime doers are more often caught and dealt with. In this class, we have discussed many different types of cybercrimes that are becoming popular as technology grows to be more popular. As people in the criminal justice field, it is their job to thwart these people at each turn they try. A prime example of this would be the 3 types of hackers. White, Grey, and Black hat hackers, are all hackers nonetheless, but what makes them different is the purpose or goal in what they aim to achieve. Black hat hackers are the criminals. They are the ones that try to steal information or attack major systems for possible monetary gain or other goals. White hat Hackers are hackers who work for companies or criminal justice agencies. They are hackers that are legally bound to a contract to point out flaws in a system and help prevent people like Black hat hackers get in. Lastly, Grey hat hackers. They are in-between black and white. Although they may not be under contract, they may still contact and help other companies with flaws in their systems for monetary gain.
