SPAN 101

Exploring Culture

In Module 4 we read about how Soccer is more than just a sport in Spain, it is a lifestyle. This video gave me an understanding that soccer is big deal in Spain such as American football is in the U.S. I grew to understand that it is taken more serious over there and helps to show from their cultural perspectives on how they value the sport of soccer.

Watching the video helped me understand their point of views and perspectives when it comes to the sport of soccer in Spain. It shows how that in Spain they feel the same way I feel about American football but with soccer. They challenged my view about it because as not being avid fan of soccer it is a breath of fresh air seeing people so patinate about a sport they love especially as being a sports management major. It worked through the conception about why some people love soccer and its because they love to represent where they are from and want to support that as much as they can.

Engaging in Communities

It is very important in engaging in you community. It is because its good to help out and make sure people in your community are taken care of and know that people from their own community care about them. I take care of my community by giving out food to the needy or even donating clothes and going out and being face to face with people jus so they know that someone who looks like them is there for them.

Interpersonal Communication

A discussion board that we did that relates to Spanish learning is the Universities discussion board. It was good to see what types of universities they have in other places. It was also nice to compare and contrast the universities they have and the ones I’ve seen in the United States.

I have definitely grown with this discussion board by learning the types of schools they have in other places. It really opened my eyes to see how their schooling is out there compared to the United States. I learned from it that it would maybe open my eyes to possibly studying abroad and what is available such as schooling in other places. It was just nice to see what Spain has to offer in such as Universities.

Presentational Speaking

I wouldn’t say there was any really presentational speaking activities per say this semester but the closest one I would say these interviews we had to do. I don’t have the video but I just took this clip from one of them.

What challenged me with these is that I am not the greatest at Spanish but I just had to try my best and memorize. I think after I got the introductions down it really helped me move on and learn more. Next time I would take more time to think about what I’m saying so I’m not freezing or stuttering as much.

Presentational Writing

This is the only thing i could find that could sorta resemble presentational writing that we did in this class. We didn’t really do any essays or anything like that so I just pulled this from one of my discussion boards.

Here i was writing about the video we had to watch where they showed us how greeting in different places could be different. It was sorta difficult to wrap my head around how they greeted each other being from America an how more relaxed they are about being in each others space. For me I think this task was pretty easy how I just had to present how I felt about the situation at hand and I could do better by adding more detail and reasons.

Interpretive Listening

An interpretive listening assignment related to Spanish learning would have to be listening to those conversations in VHL or in the Exams and answering the true or false or filling in the blanks.

There wasn’t a challenge with this it was pretty straight forward. I just had to listen to the audio clips that were there and answer the questions. My takeaway from this would be that it helped me understand and learn by listening to how people might talk and say things.

Interpretive Reading

For this one I would say when in VHL when we had certain pages to go over in the book to look over before we could do the assignment.

This wasn’t challenging for me it was pretty easy to read and learn what I needed to know to get through the reading and the assignment. I think it was just overall interesting because I am learning new things as I go so as I read it was helping me in the long run. I grow with each assignment with more knowledge from the past ones.
