
From the DVD presentation “Set-It-Off”, it begins with Frankie who works as a teller at a bank. Later in the bank we see that she has been working there for two years and was recently promoted. Then a stranger walks in the door of the bank, but Frankie recognizes him as Darnell and greets him saying, “I didn’t know you had an account here!” Darnell pulls out a revolver and demands money. Frankie begs him not to do this and glances around the bank. She sees that Darnell has two accomplices. Darnell starts to become more aggressive and shoots a woman in the head. Frankie starts to comply with Darnell’s demands as the robbers and security guards exchange gunfire with each other. Darnell and one of his accomplices are killed by the wounded security guard, but the third robber gets away with the money. After he got away, the police arrived as well and a short time later, the police questioned Frankie in the bank manager’s office. Detective Strode asks why Frankie did not follow proper procedure during the robbery.
Frankie says it was because she had a gun pointed at her. Detective Strode accuses Frankie of being an accomplice and the bank manager fires her because they are not comfortable with the fact that she knew the robber. In the next scene, We see Stony throwing her brother, Stevie, a graduation party. She is very proud because he is going to UCLA. Later in the scene, Stevie tells Stony that he didn’t get a scholarship and won’t be able to go. Then Stony tells her brother that she will get the money for him. In the next scene of Set-It-Off, we see Cloe, Stoney, and T.T working as cleaners in an office building and discussing what had happened to their friend Frankie who now used-to work at a bank. Later on their boss Luther, starts to walk in and starts to get aggressive with Cleo, Stoney, T.T. Later on T.T asked Luther about pay, and he said “ have been paying you off the books, but later her check had taxes withheld in them. T.T says she won’t be able to pay her babysitter to watch her son, because of the reduced take home pay.
Luther didn’t care about what she had to say. In a later scene of the movie it shows the police officers reviewing the recordings of the cameras from the robbery at the bank, and saw that the robber that escaped has “AP” shaved into the back of their head. On the very next day, we see the girls hanging out by Cleo’s old car that she has wanted to fix up since seventh grade. And we can also see a lot of other people in the background hanging out in the parking lot, but everyone is in their own group. Cleo starts talking about Lorenz and the robber that escaped, with $20,000. Then Cleo had an idea to rob a bank with the other girls. Stony admits that the money would be life-changing for her, but dislikes the idea of robbing the bank. Frankie makes a joke saying how they should blow up the bank.
Nate starts to approach them, and Stony goes over to talk with him about working for him selling cars. Stony talks to Nate about getting an advance. Nate agrees with the idea, but only if Stoney sleeps with him, which she does even though she doesn’t want to.On a later day, the women are sitting on a roof, talking about money, and joking around. They see a factory across the street and Cleo says that, “factories used to pay good wages before they started laying people off”. Frankie starts talking about robbing a bank. She’s partly serious, but the girls laugh it off. Once Stoney got to her house, to find out that Stevie didn’t get accepted to UCLA. Stevie lied to his sister because he didn’t want to disappoint her. When their talk ends, Stevie leaves and goes to visit a friend who turns out to be Lorenz.
When Stevie compliments Lorenz’s hair, Lorenz has his girlfriend shave “AP” into Stevie’s hair. Later, Stevie leaves with a bottle of champagne in his jacket. As he leaves Lorenz’s apartment, the police show up at Lorenz’s apartment to catch him but mistake Stevie for Lorenz and surround him. They order Stevie to get on the ground. As he begins to lay down, Stevie goes to take the bottle out of his jacket. Once he was reaching for the bottle one of the cops thought he was reaching for a gun and open fire. After shooting Stevie, Detective Strode calls for an ambulance, but it is too late. Although Detective Strode had been upset when Stevie died, when the women arrive on the scene he acts stiff and official, which upsets the women.The next day they went to work, Frankie begins to lay out her plan for robbing a bank. She was no longer joking about the bank robbery.
T.T expresses doubt, but when Frankie says they’d be stealing from the system that has been keeping them down, Stony says she is in on the plan with the robbery. Although she’s still not convinced, T.T goes with Stony to the bank. Inside the bank, Stony meets Keith, a bank employee, who asks for her phone number. She says no, but he found a way to take her number. That night, T.T brings her son to work because she can’t afford a babysitter to watch her son. Later on T.T’s son gets some cleaning supplies and the women take him to the hospital. Eventually the doctor informs T.T that her son will be fine, but she will have to talk to Ms. Wells from Child Protective Services. Ms. Wells informs T.T that CPS will maintain custody of her son from an unsafe environment and she will have to prove to a judge that she is able to provide for him.
Later as the women discuss their plans, Cleo expresses frustration with having to plan things out for the robbery, because she wants to go into the bank and just do it. This shows Cleo’s impulsive nature. Cleo then takes the women to an arms dealer named Black Sam. She convinces Black Sam to lend them guns for the robbery because Cleo told Black Sam that they will pay Black Sam back, but with interest after their job. She also mentions her history of stealing cars as part of her operation. Cleo then fines a car to steal and use as a getaway vehicle for the robbery. When she does this she tosses the owner’s CDs out the window because she wants to listen to cool music. On the day of the, T.T got too afraid to commit to the robbery with the rest of the girls to run the bank. While T.T ran away the rest of the girls went into the bank and pulled off the heist and got away with it.
And stole $12,000 in the process. Later in the DVD presentation Set-It-Off, the cut to a scene where the girls are in the garage messing around with the money they stole. Later on Cleo starts getting too excited and shoots her gun in the air and hits the ceiling. They start to divide up the money between one another, but Frankie gets mad at T.T, because she didn’t help with the robbery and doesn’t deserve to get a cut of the money. Stoney and Cleo help out T.T and say that she needs a cut of the money the most, to help her son, and Frankie apologizes to T.T for her comment about not helping the robber. Later on Stony goes on a date with Keith from the bank and begins to see the differences between his life and hers. Stoney tells Keith that she feels caged and he asked her if she plans to get out of her cage, and where do you see yourself in five years. Meanwhile detective Strode and Walker are watching footage from the women’s bank robbery.
They say that even though they were wearing wigs and sunglasses, Strode thinks he recognizes Stony and asks the Captain if he can question or at least tail Stoney, but the Captain says no. Once they get back to their garage they see Cleo and wonder why she hasn’t been to work in weeks, and she already spent all of her money she got from the heist to fix up on her car and spent money on her girlfriend. Stoney starts yelling at Cleo because of how she acts and they all agree to not act differently so they wouldn’t create any suspicion. Cleo starts to get mad and points a gun at Stoney’s head and they start arguing. Stoney left the hideout and went to go see Keith and tell him she fought one of her friends over money. Keith then says that there is nothing that can replace their friendship with one another. Later on Stoney and Cleo meet up again and make up with each other. Then all the girls began to plan out their second robbery. Cleo finds another car and steals it for their getaway car and Cleo throws out the CD’S the car. The girls arrived at the next bank and this time Cleo is staying outside as the driver.
While the women were inside, there was a homeless man outside of the bank talking with the cops. As the girls went in to rob the bank they found themselves surrounded by cops who showed up to the bank causing them to be stuck inside. Cleo then sneaks off and gets in the stolen car and drives through the bank also running over the innocent bystanders and then picks up the girls. While they escape, this time with $75,000 each, Stoney came up with a plan to hide the money they took and stay low, to where they still worked at the previous jobs, until T.T was able to get her son back, and then they all will leave town. Later they hide the money in the vent at their workplace. When the girls returned to the job, they found out that their money was gone from the vent and heard that Luther quit the cleaning business. Cleo, Frankie, and T.T went to see Black Sam and found out That he recently saw Luhter and said that he looked like he had recently come into money. Cleo tells Black Sam that Luther stole their money and his interest from them. Black Sam then got mad and helped them find out where Luther was staying and then the girls showed up to his hotel to find Luther with a white girl in bed and then they started to look around his room to find the money while pointing a gun to Luther’s face. Soon later Luther had a gun and pointed it at Cleo and T.T’s head.
Then Cleo shot Luther in the bed. Cleo threatens the woman that Luther was with and takes her driver’s license for her address and tells her to not tell anyone about this night. Detective Strode assumes that it was Cleo who killed Luther, because she has priors, and brings her in to be questioned and put in line. The woman from Luther’s hotel room was too frightened to tell the cops that Cleo Killed Luhter. Later Frankie says that we all need to rob another bank to make up for the lost money in front of the second bank, and she want’s to rob the big bank at the downtown area, where Keith also works at. Stoney was a little hesitant, but T.T needs the money to get her son back and Cleo says if they don’t rob this last bank and leave town now, they will go to jail. T.T visits CPS and Ms. Wells where she could see her son and lets T.T hold her son and wishes for good luck in court tomorrow. The women get together at a diner but have no money and leave without paying. Cleo Steals another car, Once again throwing CDs out of the car.
Then Detective Strode and Waller are giving a presentation to the bankers at DownTown Federal and Keith recognizes Stoney from a video, but doesn’t say anything. When Stony calls and tells him to meet her at a dinner, he agrees and the police end their presentation. The police leave soon after the girls show up. This Time Frankie Stays in the getaway car and Cleo, Stony, and T.T go inside. The Women shoot phones and other electronics. The police get a call from the radio that a silent alarm has gone off. They turned the car back around and went back to park in the back alley to get the drop on the girls. Frankie didn’t notice the Detectives came up from behind them and Detective Strode tells Stony he understands and is sorry about Stevie. He talks to her and says “no more killing”. Stony and Cleo shoot the security guard. Frankie hears the gunfire and pulls up to the door.
The women escaped while dragging T.T from the gunshot. Stone wants to go straight to the hospital, but Cleo says they need to switch cars, T.T then dies in Stoney’s arms while Cleo and Frankie Start up Cleo’s car. Then they left T.T’s body in the stolen car while the rest of the girls drove off in Cleo’s car, while there was a helicopter flying right above them. During the car chase, the women manage to get away temporarily from the cop car, but the helicopter was right on them. At one point they are in the tunnel with a helicopter at either end of the tunnel. And Cleo comes up with an idea for SToney and Frankie to leave the car and run with the money, so eventually they could meet up in a later spot. Cleo then drives straight out the tunnel where the helicopter was and keeps driving until it moves out the way to try and distract the cops, but is killed in the process of trying to drive away from the police and their blockade. Frankie and Stoney then split up on foot, but soon after Frankie was caught and cornered by the police as Stoney got on a bus that passed by slowly. Detective Strode tries to tell the cops not to shoot and tries to talk Frankie into surrendering. She then puts a gun to his head and asks him what the procedure is. Then she turns to run away and one of the cops shoots her. Strode bends down beside her and he and Stoney look right at each other.
He lets the bus pull away without stopping it. Stoney makes it to Mexico with the money she stole. She then thinks about all that had happened and both cries and laughs at the memories. Then she cuts her hair and calls Keith without speaking. He knows it is her and says that he’s glad she is safe. The DVD presentation Set-It-Off, ends with Stoney driving a Jeep up a hill.
