Technically, critical theory is a philosophical approach to culture, and especially to literature, that seeks to confront the social, historical, and ideological forces and structures that produce and constrain it. My definition of critical theory is reading a piece of scholarship and reflecting about what was written and figure out what its purpose is to the literary community and beyond.
