How has cyber technology created opportunities for workplace deviance?
In the last two and half years since Covid became a world pandemic, the most important cyber technology to be used by all companies has been the ability for remote access for all employees. Before Covid, most companies were slowly reducing the ability of employees working from home. But when Covid hit, the need for working from home became apparent to stop the spread of the virus and continue company productivity. And from a cyber stand point, the need for secure vpn usage became critical. So every company quickly made sure their employees could remotely connect in a secure fashion but these companies had no way to monitor their employee’s use of time while working from home. So this introduced the increase usage of time fraud – also known as time theft. Time Theft has become a largest workplace deviance. An example of time theft is logging into work and activating your company’s instant messaging platform but starting to watch TV or movies instead of concentrating your time on work related activities. Another example would be logging into work and leaving the house to run errands or go for a bike ride. I believe companies should have started monitoring instant messaging platforms more closing when employees worked from home to see how often they were idle or away from their work computers. Another potential workplace deviance is an increase in data theft. Without proper controls, employees can easily access sensitive company information and steal the information for profit. So essentially, working from home could increase the number of insider threats. To mitigate the potential loss of company data, all companies should have quickly installed some form of Data Loss Prevention (DLP) technology on all company computers, servers and networks. These DLP products monitor how information is being transmitted and then decides if the action should be allowed or prevented.
