Entry # 5

Most people nowadays have their own computer or one provided to them by their school or work.  Or even if you are borrowing one, it is important to make sure that computer is protected and safe to use before you go online with it.  I have only owned Windows based systems in my life and can attest that Microsoft tries to include adequate protections in their operating system.  The primary sections for staying protected are patches, firewall and antivirus. You always want to be sure any Windows Patches are installed to prevent any known vulnerabilities in the operating system. You also never want to disable the firewall which is turned on by default. The third check is to verify that the virus definitions are always up to date. Windows 10 has a settings sections called Windows Security and it can show you at a glance, the status of your protection. A secondary level of protection would be the removal of administrative permissions.  You do not want to accidentally click on an email link or a link on a website that automatically installs some sort of malware or unwanted software while you are logged in with a Windows profile that has administrative permissions.  It is much safer to use a Windows profile that does not have permissions to install any software or make any system changes.  So, create a standard user profile with limited permissions and use that profile for daily activities.  You can always switch back to your Administrator account for installing any software you need.  Unfortunately, Microsoft nor the computer seller make any effort to provide this last piece of advice and that becomes one of the biggest reasons how malware and ransomware get installed on so many computers. In addition to that fact, no one forces everyone to take cyber-technology training as a method to become aware of the different ways malicious actions can enter your computer.  If more people were trained before they used any computer before going online, the less number of cyber incidents will occur.
