Journal Entry #4 CYSE 201S

Review the articles linked with each individual motive in Module 5.  Rank the motives from 1 to 8 as the motives that you think make the most sense (being 1) to the least sense (being 7).  Explain why you rank each motive the way you rank it

Motives are the reason why people do the things that they do whether good or bad. Some do not make sense. The primary ones that I am going to rank include Entertainment, Political, Revenge, Boredom, Recognition, For Money and lastly multiple reasons.

  1. For Money- This to me makes the most sense by far. Money is what makes the world go around and is a big reason for how society works. We go to college which costs money to get a degree so we can use that degree to get a good job that pays good money. Cybercriminals spend their money in a variety of ways but what does not surprise me is that a big chunk of it goes to investing it to make more money.
  2. Political- A new way of cyber threats happens to be hacktivism. People or hackers that are involved in this are trying to get a message across that supports their cause whether it is good or bad. Social Media is a big drive in this aspect of motives. These hackers can cause big problems for some servers that cause losses of money, and it brings attention to the issues that they are trying to spread. The criminals that do this have a high moral obligation because a lot of the time it does not do too much for them individually but rather a certain group or groups of people or things.
  3. Recognition- Recognition is sort of in the same area as for money but not as direct. It seems to be sort of an ego booster for some but a lot of the time if the person attacking is trying to do it for a good cause at the same time it can result in their name becoming a well-known one and can result and more opportunities and possibilities for the individual or individuals.
  4. Multiple Reasons- This reason is kind of a gray area because of the possibilities. It can include any of the reasons above or below in any extent which is why I put it in the middle. It can also make the most sense as well. If it is for money and political, it can cause a lot of issues but ultimately this is a very broad motive.
  5. Revenge- Revenge as a motive I think is by far the most malicious out of the reasons listed. It is primarily done to put down whoever the target is and most of the time it is bad. Things like Revenge porn can ruin someone’s life for no reason. A big problem is that when dealing with revenge most of the time it involves emotions rather than logic and doing something good. Revenge only satisfies the accused and hurts everyone else.
  6. Entertainment- This Motive is another broad one but makes less sense than the others. It mostly just causes trouble but can also be entertaining for the accused and even the public in some respects.
  7. Boredom- Lastly, we have boredom. It seems rather silly, but it makes some sense. Cyber bullying is stated as an example of this motive. It does not have to be malicious, but it is for a stupid reason. Boredom as a motive has no beneficial value for anyone even the accused.

Motives are a big way we try to reason why humans do what they do. In the cyber field money makes the most sense to me as a motive and it has been proven that most hackers’ motives are in fact based off money in some sort of way.
