Four ethical Issues that arise when storing electronic information about individuals are: Right to Privacy, Possibility of Breach, Confidentiality, and Extortion.
Having information stored on anything that can connect to a network can be accessed from pretty much anywhere if people have the right tools. It is important to be safe but these four things can be ethically conflicting for some people as personal information is something that can be used for bad things. The right to privacy is something everyone deserves. At the same time information is needed to separate people and individualize people. People can use your name in a negative manner if accessed. The possibility of a breach in a network is something that can happen fairly easily. An example could be a hacking of a major company. Thousands of peoples personal information such as Names, addresses, and credit card information could be leaked to an individual or faction wanting something. A problem with things being leaked is that it cannot easily be undone. The internet is so vast not everything can be deleted. Things like this cause people to be rightfully skeptical about putting their information online but in a growing internet society this is becoming more and more avoidable. A scary thing that often happens because people do not use the correct safety measures is extortion. People can blackmail employees or regular people for information that is considered secret. Although not all measures work people should use most effective ways to protect their information like two factor authentication and encryption. Companies often use these to make sure their information stays secure but it does not always work. Hackers will try to do things like Pretexting. Cyber Security exists for these reasons so we can prevent breaches and personal information being leaked whether it is an individual or a company. Protecting things is a priority and everyone can take steps to make sure information is as hard to access as possible.
