Systems like SCADA are used in many things associated with technologies involving infrastructure and many other things. Some examples are Water treatment, gas pipelines, and wind farms. These systems are created and managed by engineers who make them to try and combat cyber-attacks. The thing is if an attack were to happen on something that these systems were made for such as a traffic light or something factory related it can result in loss of lives. That is why engineers are a very big part of safety in cybersecurity. Engineering efforts includes activities such as concept exploration, analysis of alternatives, and preliminary or applied research to refine the concepts. This basically means keeping up with the systems to make sure to minimize the vulnerabilities. They also create security or special purpose systems for this reason. System security is the application of engineering and management principles, concepts, criteria, and techniques to optimize security within the constraints of operational effectiveness, time, and cost throughout all stages of the system life cycle. This focuses on the protection of stakeholder and system assets to exercise control over asset loss and the associated consequences. An example of engineering being important in sports would be NASCAR. They ride in extremely fast race cars that are designed to protect the driver while going at deadly speeds. At the end of the day, it is about protecting your most valuable asset which is the driver. That is what the stakeholders care about the most. Networks are important because they send information between devices. If engineers do not create it and maintain security, it can cause a lot of financial and possibly physical damage depending on the medium the system is on. Things involving heavy machinery are the most severe and can cause loss of life or like I said earlier with traffic lights.
