In my Health Profession class, I discovered what type of learner I am. I took a survey, and the results provided stated that my learning style is a Sensor Thinker. I am an analytical learner who works in an organized fashion. I work best alone by repetitious drills and memorizes easily. After I read about the description of a sensor thinker I read about the strategies. A sensor thinker works in a quiet place that’s organized, taking detail notes from the beginning. I did not try any of the strategies because I’ve been doing them already. I made a connection reading about a Sensor Thinker, because it described how I already learned and studied.
I have really good study habits. I often tend to switch up my locations, so I will have less distractions. One week I will study in my room; another in the library; or the study hall in my building. There is always a distraction where ever I go. For example, my phone is with me everywhere, and I tend to catch my self scrolling through social media in the middle of study time. Moreover, If I’m in my room I am more likely to answer a Facetime call; or if I am in the study hall I will easily get distracted if a group of people is talking. Furthermore, I study at night time. When I come home from class I’ll take a nap, so when I wake up I’ll have more energy to be alert. I feel like my studying is good, but there is always room for improvements. Sometimes, I will wake up late from my nap, so I would end up staying up later than I anticipated studying and doing my homework.
On the other hand, the transition to college has been a rollercoaster. In high school we were babied and under strict enforcement. However, college is the complete opposite. I expected college to be this way though. My parents and teachers stressed how different and difficult college would be. Nobody will chase us down, so we can handle our responsibilities; we won’t have a person as alarm clock anymore; and it will be very hard to get the makeup/ extra credit work easily granted like high school. Moreover, living on campus has its own challenges. I happen to live in the furthest dorm building, so I had to figure out how long It would take me to get to class, and how long I took me to get dressed. Usually, I could take whatever time and try to cut traffic when I drive to school making it on time. But, I can’t cheat anymore because I have to walk now. One great thing about living on campus though is the freedom.
Connecting to campus has been okay. A challenge I have encountered this semester is the amount of work we get. Including the papers, projects, test, and homework, all due next week! It is very overwhelming, and I often feel this sense that it is too much on my plate. But I can always go to a study table and get help with my work. I would like to learn more about tutoring for other classes. My roommate has helped me with semester. Sometimes, she will remind me of work due or help we understand a specific problem I’m having trouble with. On the other hand, I attended a meeting to join the field hockey team. I am very interested in playing a sport!
