My experience with technology as it pertains to the hierarchy of needs can be summed up by examining each layer of the pyramid from the bottom up:

  • Physiological needs – Obviously, in the United States, we are striving to evolve into a post-scarcity society. Many of us are more privileged than others because we have access to food, clean water, heat, air conditioning, and shelter. Technology could help us exponentially to help the people not so fortunate. Technology helps us to get supplies where there is demand.
  • Security and safety – Just like a person wants to feel safe and secure, we want to make cyberspace safe and secure for thousands of uses. Technological security also means physical security, allowing for top of the line security systems to monitor organizations, businesses, and houses.
  • Love and Belonging – Technology enables us to keep in touch with family even several thousand miles away and in different countries. It has also helped bridge the divide between cultures, languages, and supports diversity.
  • Self-Esteem – While the media today might decry social media as a great evil, it has also allowed for people to share their experiences with the world and even start careers as influencers.
  • Self-Actualization – Humanity does strive onwards toward progress, even in the wake of regressive movements wishing to stagnate it. Technology has enabled humans to emerge from caves, build castles, build industries, and explore the stars.
