Evaluation Questions:

How effective are yearly trainings offered in order to ensure staff is appropriately trained to maintain a safe environment for both the children and the staff?

How effective is the discharge process in helping ensure children’s needs will be met after discharge (continuity of care post discharge.)

How will I get my information?

I will get my information by interviewing one of the unit coordinators, interviewing the patient advocate, interviewing on of the staff members, one of the teachers, and also by observing the patients.

Observing the patients I will be looking for…

Interaction amongst themselves

Interaction with the staff

Watching their behaviors with different activities (meal times, school, indoor activities and outdoor activities.)

Interview with unit coordinator questions:

About how many people are staffed on the unit?

What is the kid to staff ratio?

What are the safety measures taken?

About how many restaints, seclusions, and time outs does the unit average?

What kind of children are in that unit?

What are the pre requistites to work there?

Is there a lot of children that come back to the institution?

Interview with patient advocate:

About how many complaints come in per week?

What are the steps taken when a complaint comes in?

Interview with teacher:

What is the average amount of students in the classroom?

How many staff members are there to assist?

Are the children all in the same level academically?

Interview with staff members

Do you feel safe?

What training was done prior to working on the floor?

Do you feel support from your collegues?

What would be something that you would change in safety?

Describe a normal day

Changes based on feedback: Unfortunately interviewing parents pre and post to the treatment would. not be possible because, most of the treatment is extensive and it would require a length of time in speaking to the parents. I would ask the following questions to the unit coordinator, what is the reason that the kids come back if they do. I will also ask what preventative care is done to avoid the kids from coming back to the facility.
