Cyber technology has created a wider area of opportunities for deviance in the workplace. Acts of deviance range from unusual acts, out of the norm social interactions, or unwanted sexual behavior from coworkers or bosses. Due to the fairly easy use and quick access that cyber technologies provide, deviance is much easier to be partaken upon because of this. What is a reason that deviance can occur? There are a a decent amount of ways that this could happen. The first that I would like to discuss is an employee who feels like they were mistreated and/or wrongly fired. In order to get back at their employer they could do a multitude of things. One thing that they could do is corrupt some confidential files that they had access to as payback. Another instance of deviance in this scenario is that they could download confidential information and sell it to business competitors for financial gain. These scenarios would be considered deviance from the company and the normality and trustworthiness that they expect from their employees. There is one form of deviance that can cause further harm to a companies infrastructure and confidential information. If a disgruntled employee wants payback at the company for what they feel to be a wrong doing, they could shut down the security systems. Shutting down the security systems poses a number of risk. The broadest risk being completely vulnerable to attack. Because of cyber technology more doors have opened for opportunities and events of deviance to occur. With being online and being able to commit acts of deviance from behind a desk, it is more difficult to find perpetrators. This means that they could potentially cause more harm over time instead of just having a single isolated act of deviance. Although workplace deviance has long been occurring, cyber technologies have made it easier to act on and harder to get caught.
