Four ethical issues that arise when storing private information about individuals are privacy and confidentiality, security breaches, system implementation, and data inaccuracies. When discussing the first issue, privacy and confidentiality, we are referring to who has access to the information. Along with who has access to the information, it is important that only people who are have the proper permissions or in some cases, obliged to the information according to the law. In all cases, information must be protected. Security breaches must be handled quickly and with extreme care because they threaten privacy of confidential and private information about individuals. The best way to combat breaches in security are by implementing firewalls, intrusion detection software, and antivirus software. In order to protect this information and maintain adequate security of confidential information. Policies specifically structured to ensure this safety are set in place. In the work place, to help identify individuals, they are provided with things such as personal identifications, secure computers, and the use of encrypted data transmissions. Poorly implemented systems cause problems on both the back end of use by admin and problems for the user. These systems are not only more difficult to navigate and take longer to gain access to authorized information, but it can also develop risks if the system is poorly designed. These risks involve security breaches and stolen confidential information. Poor implementation of systems will lead to high end-user dissatisfaction as well. The last ethical issue that I want to discuss is data inaccuracies. With data inaccuracies, it leads to failure of information integrity and reliability. Inaccurate information also can be caused by lost information in a database or destructed information in a database. This will negatively affect both the individuals whose information was lost/corrupted, as well as the company or provider of who had lost the information of the individual.
