Over the years, the fine line between criminal justice and cybercrime has faded. Now, cybercrime in my opinion has become one of, if not the biggest component of criminal justice. With technology evolving rapidly, new doors open up that let traditional criminals and traditional crimes to evolve into a never-ending and limitless space with ample opportunity to commit crimes anywhere at any time. Because cybercrime is a new pressing matter in criminal justice, a new branch was created to catch these new age criminals. This space of cybercrime is known as digital forensics; the recovery and investigation of material found in digital devices. “Our understanding about the connection between crime and technology, however, has not kept pace with the technological changes that have shaped criminal behavior.” (Payne & Hadzhidimova, 2019) What crimes must do we have to evolve to protect and prosecute against? One of the new crimes is identity theft, however this type of identity theft is different because the crime doesn’t have to be performed in public where one has to physically steal some one’s private information. Crimes like this can be committed from the privacy and comfort of one’s home and which can be committed, if skilled enough, with little or no trace evidence. Cybercrime is more than just a new branch in criminal justice. The arms of cybercrime reach to financial institutions, businesses, and federal institutions too. Just because these crimes can be committed remotely does not make cyber crimes victimless. This is now one of if not the largest threat to almost all institutions. In reality, in this new day and age, cybercrime is the most pressing issue and the biggest threat to modern society. Not only because there are limitless possibilities to what these crimes can be, but because they can be anonymous and viscous attacks with no remorse.
