The United States and the United Kingdom have similar and different cybersecurity risks. One thing they have in common is that they both regulate and tell organizations what cybersecurity measures they should have at the very least. In both countries, if a company does not comply with these regular measures, then they have to deal with the legal consequences. The UK has a General Data Protection Regulation that enhances data protection and privacy, if they do not follow this plan, then they can be fined. The US is currently facing a cybersecurity workforce shortage, which means more problems for companies without cybersecurity professionals. Both the US and the UK face cyber threats from criminal organizations that have ranged from ransomware attacks, data breaches, and financial fraud. The main concerns of the US and the UK are to protect their critical infrastructures, like energy, healthcare, and transportation. Keeping the core of the infrastructure is crucial to defending the US or UK from cyber attacks. There is a Netflix movie called “Leave The World Behind” that I watched recently that tried to show what could happen if hackers had taken over most of the infrastructure in the US. Cell phone lines were down, all media and internet were down, power was out, terrorists were flying around dropping fliers with “Death to America” on them in Arabic writing. The movie itself did not have that good of acting, but it was made to bring attention to cybersecurity issues in the US and what could happen. Both in the US and the UK could these problems happen and the US specifically has had the most breaches in the world (since 2021). Most attacks are simple phishing attacks, but more ways to get into systems are being found out day after day. The UK has been known to have better cybersecurity operations than the US, but the potential for disaster still exists in both countries, which is why so many measures need to be taken.
