Engineers make cyber networks safer by having an engineering mindset. I say an engineering mindset in that the engineer sees a problem that needs to be solved or an existing issue needing to be corrected and they begin to work on such a solution. Starting with communication in the form of emails or messaging applications. This two-way form of communication can easily be intercepted or viewed by the unintended recipients. Now these messages might just be a grocery list exchanged between spouses, but they could also be something more serious such as police tactics, financial information or simply messages that the sender and receiver wish to remain private. This is made safe due to cryptography. Cryptography is nothing new and was around long before computers but now a new form of encryption is a result. A message sender can encrypt their message where only the intended recipient can unencrypt the message with the use of public/private security keys. Another form of engineering that has made cyber networks safer are firewalls. A firewall can be implemented into a network that monitors communication into and out of a network. This network could be a doctor’s office, financial institution or a home Wi-Fi network. This firewall acts as a bouncer at a club. If someone or something does not have the right credentials or proof of identity, they are not allowed in, or in some cases out, like at the Chuck E. Cheese establishment. Lastly, once inside a network, a form of software called Intrusion Detection System (IDS) resides. The Intrusion Detection System can monitor a network of malicious applications or a policy violation. Once alerted to such an intrusion or malfunction the Intrusion Detection System can alert the responsible party monitoring the network to take immediate remedial steps to safeguard the network and prevent further damage.
