There is no doubt that computers have made the world safer. On the other side of the figurative coin, they have also made the world less safe. With the advance of technology, computers are everywhere and even in our pockets. This enables us to have a plethora of information and means of communication at our fingertips. This is a double edge sword because with this vast avenue of communication individuals can commit heinous crimes such as human trafficking and viewing or disseminating child pornography. There seems to be an unfathomable appetite for this sort of crime which only adds fuel to the fire for these criminals. Computers do not stop there with aiding criminals to commit crimes. Criminals can also commit cyber crimes in the form of infecting computers with viruses or malicious code. Once inside a computer these criminals can have access to personal medical records or financial documents which can lead to fraud or money withdrawals. Technology then steps in to put a stop to such activity. Starting with criminals, once arrested, their personal information even DNA can be stored on databases that can be accessed by authoritative departments such as the FBI or local police departments. This enables the authorities to find and link certain individuals to various crimes they commit. This information can be accessed worldwide which hopefully leads to arrests and ultimately convictions through the criminal justice system. Another benefit to curb viruses or cyber-attacks, “Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are software framework monitors for malicious activities and policy violations. They are placed at strategic points to monitor the network traffic. Firewalls are mostly used outside while IDS can also watch for attacks from inside and outside simultaneously.” (Module 10). IDS can aid a business in safeguarding customers account and information from attack along with stopping system viruses. Though these are just a few pros and cons of computers in the world today, I think in the bigger picture computers and technology make the world safer.
