There are many costs and benefits of developing cybersecurity programs in business. Some businesses might look at having cybersecurity programs as “you are damned if you do, you are damned if you do not”. I think the benefits of a cybersecurity program far outweigh their costs. First, comes the legal ramifications if a business system has a breach in security. The customers of a business trust the business to safeguard their personal information no matter what it is. If there is a breach in the systems security and an individual’s personal information is released that customer may seek legal action to recoup costs. Cost could include additional resources to ultimately be reimbursed if they lose money as a result or worse their identity is stolen, they may need to hire an outside agency to cease further damage. Costs could continue to add up in the realm of personal time spent and possibly the loss of wages. “Businesses and organizations must notify authorities when a system security breach occurs. Failure to protect data may make companies liable for lawsuits and failing to protect to civil liberties of consumers may place companies at risk.” (Module 8). In this instance, if a business had a cybersecurity program they could have been alerted of the breach at the start and with the early warning, step in to stop the damage and alert their customers of the detection. A part of the cybersecurity program the business could have acquired a form of cybersecurity insurance that protects them in the event of a lawsuit or to provide money or corrective actions to their customers. Lastly, in the event a business has a data or system security breech, there could be external costs incurred due to any business disruptions, damage to equipment, and revenue losses. The business disruption and revenue loss could span weeks to years to recoup. With that sort of publicity current or future customers lose faith in the business and to change that perspective will not happen overnight.
