Most cyber-attacks have some type of motive that drives them to pursue the attack, so ranking the motives from what makes the most sense to which makes the least. Starting at #1 I would choose political motives. This motive makes the most sense because in our society a lot of information is being hidden by the government and hacktivists are making it their duty to publish this information to the public so we can be aware of some things our government is trying to do behind our backs. The second motive I believe to make the most sense is revenge. I believe this motive makes sense due to the fact that revenge is a motive that is fueled by emotion which could also help investigators find who did it. The third motive would be money because this motive fuels one of the most common cyber attacks which is ransomware. The fourth motive is recognition. Recognition can be complicated but it makes sense because recognition comes from ego and them wanting to show how flawed systems are. The fifth motive is bored and this motive doesn’t make a lot of sense but can be explained by this motive being driven by wanting to see how weak a company system is and just to see if they can accomplish it. The sixth motive is entertainment and this is one of the least made-sense motives because the only reason attackers do it is to “troll” or make fun of someone for others humor. The last motive is the psychological motive because it can be driven by a multitude of things but truly comes down to the attacker’s characteristics.
