Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is that our needs are like a pyramid, and once we complete the lower levels, we focus on the higher-level needs. This idea is accurate for every person but each person’s needs can be different depending on the human. The lowest level of the pyramid is the physiological level and this represents the “basic needs.” At this level, I have had times where I had no service and have found myself being more agitated with people and it made me realize that as technology has progressed I have inserted it into a basic necessity. The next level is “security needs.” It has been a time when my computer had a virus on it and was moving slowly, I instantly panicked and looked up how to fix it and install antivirus protection on my computer. Third level is “belongingness and love need.” Technology has become a place where anyone can belong through friendships you find on video games and social media, for example when I was 10 I found a group of friends who lived all around the world that brought me into their friend group and we played PlayStation 4 together every day. The fourth level is “esteem needs.” At this level, I have found myself caught in numerous rabbit holes trying to find ways to become the best at a video game once I was the best and was acknowledged as the best in my friend group gave me an extreme feeling of accomplishment but this can be dangerous due to if never feeling accomplished could lead you down a bad path. Last level is “Self-actualization” which is a level that many of us never get to but eventually understand that the small accomplishments make each of these levels worth it once you get past them!
